Dr Tom Pierce went to the newly created Medical School in 1976, and saw first-hand cardiac surgery as a house Officer at Southampton’s Western Hospital in 1982. After his medical SHO training in Derby he moved to anaesthesia and intensive care in Nottingham and then Southampton.
Just Deinum was born with a Tetralogy of Fallot in combination with a VSD. He is a board member advocacy of the Patient Association Congenital Heart Disorders (PAH) in the Netherlands.
Laraine met Matt in 1995 and they married in 1999. Matt was diagnosed with an ASD in 1980 while Laraine’s ASD diagnosis came in 2006. Matt works in IT and Laraine works in sales development. They have 3 grown up daughters.
Louisa Nielsen (BSc, HCPC, CSP) is a Principal Cardiothoracic and Adult Congenital Heart Physiotherapist (ACHP) at University Hospital Southampton. She has a keen interest in pre and post operative optimisation, critical care, promotion of healthy active lifestyles and developing services through evidence-based practice.
I have worked in Southampton hospitals since I started nurse training in 1978! After qualifying I worked on medical, cardiac and thoracic wards as a staff nurse. In 1983 I joined the Cardiac Intensive Care team caring for patients and babies who had heart surgery. The majority of my nursing career has been in Critical Care.
Networks & ACHD nursing – Clinical Nurse Specialist. I qualified as a nurse from Middlesex University and have worked within cardiology throughout my career, in CCU, cardiothoracic critical care, and now as an advanced nurse practitioner for adult congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension.
Richard, our Mental Health & Wellbeing Counsellor was born with a heart condition so understands some of the difficulties & anxieties faced by others. Richard’s Counselling and fortnightly Zoom sessions for our Friends and Supporters are a much-valued resource, delivering over 500 hours of mental health support every year.
Leigh Nisbet is a Trustee of Somerville Heart Foundation. She is a Criminal Defence Solicitor and Advocate at a long-established East London legal aid firm. She represents some of the most vulnerable in society accused or charged with criminal offences at police stations, Magistrates Courts and in the Crown Court.
